Why vets need antibiotics for animal health

More and more we hear from citizens saying that the welfare of animals is a key concern, both for the animals who play an important role in our lives, and also when consuming animal-sourced food products. Promoting a One Health approach to their care, which includes good housing, hygiene, nutrition, disease prevention and health management, along with the Responsible Use of antibiotics when necessary.

Some animals will still become ill with infectious bacterial diseases, just like we do, and treatment is essential. The availability and the success of different antibiotic treatments over the past years have had a positive impact on the welfare of farm animals and pets, curing disease and preventing unnecessary suffering.

Antibiotics remain very important to maintain high levels of animal health and welfare in Europe and the vet will always require these precious resources in their toolbox.
